How to create high impact social videos

Videos are eye-catching, engaging...and everywhere. Thanks to platforms like YouTube, IGTV, TikTok and other Social Medias, video consumption is on the rise and it’s not slowing down, with predictions that by 2022, video will make up more than 82% of all consumer internet traffic.

Why you should use video in your social strategy

Customers want to connect with the brands they care about and it’s up to brands to produce quality content that tells a story, informs, entertains or answers questions to maintain that brand loyalty and attract new customer relationships.

This is where the versatility of video comes in handy. With demos, how-to’s, live-streaming, testimonials, behind-the-scenes and product reviews, the types of content you can produce are seemingly endless and the pay off is big. Around 84% of people have said they were convinced to buy a product or service after watching a brand’s video

Even if a brand video doesn’t immediately convert customers to purchase, the magic of video is that it increases the time that customers spend engaged with a brand compared to photo or text posts, which helps with brand awareness and recall for when they’re ready to purchase.

What stops brands from using video more?

For some small businesses trying to get an edge over competitors through social media, utilising video as part of a social strategy can be a bit of a challenge. According to research conducted by video publishing platform, Vimeo, only 22% of small businesses felt they were using enough video in their social strategy and 96% reported that issues around time, cost and complexity were preventing them using video more.

Fortunately, there are many apps and softwares that have been developed to help small businesses and marketers with video creation, editing and distribution. Amongst them is an exciting new app from Vimeo called Vimeo Create.

6 tips for creating high impact social videos

Whether you’re using Vimeo or another app or software, here’s some tips to help make sure your videos are effective.

Give it purpose Why is your audience watching your video? What do you want them to do next? For ads, include a call-to-action where possible so your customers know what to do next.

Pick a cover image – For where autoplay is unavailable (ie. Instagram profiles, YouTube etc), nominate a cover image that captures the essence of the video and will entice customers to click and watch.

Grab attention in the first 5sec – Attention spans are elusive so put interesting visuals or the most important points at the front of the video to encourage customers to watch the video to completion.

Caption it: Around 85% of Facebook videos are watched with sound off so add text or captions when editing your video to accommodate customers watching in public or quiet spaces.

Keep it short: Videos don’t need to be long to be effective, in fact less than 2 minutes is ideal to get to the point and maintain engagement.

Don’t forget to brand it! Your brand is your business, so make sure your brand is displayed somewhere in your video to increase brand awareness, association, recognition and recall.
